We feel fortunate that we made two good decisions 12 plus years ago. First, we bought an IBM system 36 machine and second, we chose Responsive Data Systems software (RDS). We are on our third IBM machine (AS400 170 now) but we are still using the same retail software. Our business has grown substantially over the years and RDS has continued to keep pace with us. We have always felt that the software had more capabilities than we we're utilizing, and needed additional time to learn about those capabilities. I think we did things a little backwards as far as installing and using the software over the years. Basically we had two businesses using one software. The largest part of our business is our wholesale side, which we implemented RDS software first.
The system was installed on the wholesale side for several years before we set it up for our retail store. I still feel we were fortunate in choosing the system and RDS software because, at the time, we were working hard and we knew how to sell the products but no one was an expert with computers and software. We told the salesmen that we wanted to buy something that was rock solid. We didn't want any headaches. We got away with that approach for many years but now that we have installed the software in our Retail store, and with the growth of the company it is a fulltime job setting up users and keeping them going. And, that is ok, now.
What do we like about the RDS software? First, it's on an IBM AS400 Computer; we don't want to be down, and not able to sell to either our retail or wholesale customers. It is important both to our customers and users that they have confidence in our system. Other than the software being on a solid based machine we find the software easy to use. Not only is it easy to train a new clerk quikly in our retail store but also we have a core group that have used the software from the start and they know exactly what the system can and can't do and I'm sure they wouldn't want to change!
The simplicity of the system is in the setup. The software contains several options for setting up Sku's, customers, promotions, kits, and most important, pricing. We have several different types of customers with different levels of pricing. Consequently, one of the most important things for us was to understand what we could do with the price levels. We also needed to know what to with Sku's and Item Classes setup. There are a lot of details to go into, but I'll just say that we use a lot of different functions available on the system and they work. I'll leave the system details to RDS. We have Barn Card customers (retail) and several levels of wholesale customers and we can count on the system to charge the right price without having to call the "key people" constantly.
